Privacy Policy

Overview

Captioneer is designed with privacy as a default, not an afterthought. Importing, editing, and exporting your video all happen locally on your iPhone. We do not operate any servers, collect any personal data, or run any analytics.

Data We Collect

None. Captioneer does not collect any personal information, usage data, crash reports, or analytics.

Speech Transcription — Totally On-Device, No Server, Ever

Captioneer uses Apple's Speech framework to transcribe your clip's audio into captions, and only ever runs it in on-device mode. Your audio is processed entirely on your iPhone and never leaves the device — not to Apple, not to us, not to anyone. Because nothing is uploaded, transcription itself needs no internet connection and works fine in Airplane Mode, as long as your device already has the on-device speech data for that language (see below).

If a language's on-device speech model isn't installed on your specific device, Captioneer tells you so directly and won't transcribe — it does not fall back to a server. This was a deliberate choice: earlier versions of the underlying framework could fall back to Apple's server-based recognition, and we removed that path entirely so there is no code in the app that can ever send your audio anywhere.

Which languages currently have on-device support is determined by iOS and your device, not by Captioneer, and can change with future iOS updates.

Video Editing & Export

Video import, caption compositing, burn-in rendering, and export always happen locally on your device using Apple's AVFoundation framework. Your video file itself is never uploaded or transmitted anywhere by Captioneer, regardless of which transcription path above was used for the audio.

Photo Library Access

Captioneer requests access to your photo library so you can select a clip to caption and save your exported video. This access is used solely to read and write files on your device at your direction. No video content is uploaded or transmitted anywhere.

Third-Party Services

Captioneer does not integrate any third-party SDKs, advertising networks, or analytics services, and contacts no external service of any kind — speech recognition, editing, and export all run using on-device Apple frameworks only.

Children's Privacy

Captioneer does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. Since we collect no information from anyone, this is satisfied by design.

Changes to This Policy

If our privacy practices change, we will update this page with a new "Last updated" date. Material changes will also be noted in the App Store release notes.
