Australian passport photo: size, face height and how to print it

Australian passport applications use a printed photo. These are the rules passports.gov.au publishes, with how Complyshot turns your phone photo into a print sheet.

The official rules

  • A printed photo 35 to 40 mm wide and 45 to 50 mm high.
  • Your face, from chin to crown, 32 to 36 mm tall.
  • A plain white or light grey background.
  • The Australian Passport Office does not recommend online photo services or mobile apps, and warns about identity fraud. A photo taken in person is the safest route.

How to do it with Complyshot

  1. Open Complyshot and choose “Australian passport photo (print)” from the document list.
  2. Take the photo in even light, facing the camera, ideally with someone else holding the phone.
  3. Read the result. Each rule is checked, and a failed one comes with what to change.
  4. Save the print sheet, print it at 100% (actual size) at any photo kiosk, and cut along the grey lines.

Common questions

What size should I print an Australian passport photo?

Between 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with your face 32–36 mm from chin to crown. Complyshot uses 35 × 45 mm, which sits inside that range, and puts eight of them on a 10 × 15 cm sheet.

How do I print the sheet?

Save the sheet to your photos and print it at 100% (actual size) on photo paper at any photo kiosk. Then cut along the grey lines.

Is it safe to use an app for this?

The Australian Passport Office advises against online photo services and apps. Complyshot runs on your phone, does not upload your photo and never edits your face or background, but the advice is yours to weigh. If you prefer, have the photo taken in person.
