Passport and visa photo questions

How do I print a 35 × 45 mm photo for an Australian passport?

Print it as a colour photo print, not on a home inkjet printer. The Australian Passport Office asks for 2 identical photos, 35 to 40 mm wide and 45 to 50 mm high, printed by dye sublimation on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm, and less than 6 months old. A 35 × 45 mm photo printed at actual size meets the size rule; check with the photo kiosk or print counter that it prints by dye sublimation on glossy paper before you print.

What the official page says

  • 2 identical photos, 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high.
  • Your face from chin to crown 32–36 mm.
  • Good-quality colour prints made by dye sublimation, not from an inkjet printer, on heavy-weight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.
  • Less than 6 months old, with a plain white or light grey background, and no shadows, reflections or retouching.
  • The Australian Passport Office recommends a professional passport photo provider and does not recommend online photo services or mobile apps, which it says may put you in danger of identity fraud.

How to do it with Complyshot

  1. Open Complyshot and choose “Australian passport photo (print)”.
  2. Take the photo in even light against a plain white or light grey wall, ideally with someone else holding the phone.
  3. Read the result and fix anything flagged. Complyshot crops your real photo so your face prints at 32–36 mm, without editing your face or background.
  4. Save the print sheet: eight 35 × 45 mm photos on a 10 × 15 cm sheet. Print it at 100% (actual size) as a glossy dye-sublimation print, then cut out 2 photos along the grey lines.

Can I print an Australian passport photo at home?

Not on a normal home printer. The Australian Passport Office asks for dye-sublimation prints, not inkjet prints, on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm.

What size is it in inches and pixels?

35 × 45 mm is about 1 3/8 × 1 3/4 inches. There is no pixel size, because Australian applications use printed photos; what matters is that it prints at actual size.

Does someone need to sign the back of the photo?

Only for a paper application form: your guarantor signs the back of one photo and writes that it is a true photo of you, with your full name. You do not need a guarantor to renew your passport.

Is it safe to use an app for this?

The Australian Passport Office advises against online photo services and apps. Complyshot runs on your iPhone, does not upload your photo and never edits your face or background, but the advice is yours to weigh; a professional provider is the route it recommends.

Check your photo in Complyshot

Complyshot checks your photo on your iPhone; the photo is not uploaded. Checking is free, and saving the finished photo is a one-time purchase, with no subscription.

Download on the App Store

Complyshot is made by YOTEZIC LTD and is not affiliated with any government. It checks what a phone can measure and cannot promise that your photo will be accepted; the issuing office decides.
