Passport and visa photo questions

Can I take my Irish passport photo at home?

Yes, for an online application. ireland.ie says you can have your photo taken at home with a camera, tablet or phone, but someone else must take it: selfies are not accepted, and applicants who send one are asked for another photo. A paper application needs 4 identical printed photos instead, with 2 of them signed and stamped by your witness.

What the official page says

  • Someone else takes the photo. No selfies, and no zoom.
  • A colour JPEG at least 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels high, no larger than 9 MB, not scanned and not digitally enhanced or changed.
  • Head to mid-torso, with visible space between your head and shoulders and the edges of the photo.
  • A completely plain light grey, white or cream background, and no shadows on your face or behind your head.
  • A neutral expression with your mouth closed and no smile, looking straight into the camera.
  • Taken in the last 6 months.

How to do it with Complyshot

  1. Stand in front of a plain, light wall, with soft, even light on your face.
  2. Open Complyshot and choose “Ireland passport photo (online)”. It starts in helper mode on the back camera, so the person taking the photo holds the phone.
  3. Read the result. Framing, sharpness, lighting, open eyes, background, pixel size and file size are checked, and anything that fails comes with what to change.
  4. Save the photo. It is the whole photo, uncropped, as a JPEG under 9 MB, ready to upload.

Related questions

What size is an Irish passport photo in pixels?

At least 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels high, in JPEG, and no larger than 9 MB. ireland.ie gives a minimum, not a maximum, so a full-size phone photo is fine if the file is under 9 MB.

Will my passport photo be in colour?

No. The photo in an Irish passport is black and white, but for an online application you still submit a colour photo; it is converted during the application.

The website keeps rejecting my photo. What now?

First check the file: a JPEG under 9 MB, at least 715 × 951 pixels. If photos taken at home keep failing, ireland.ie suggests a Photo Code from a participating booth or a photo provider.
