Overview
Captionry creates, edits and exports captions on your iPhone. Your video and audio stay there unless you choose Share link for a video. If you turn on AI, Captionry sends a request to polish and translate the captions. It includes the caption text with its timing, the languages you chose and any caption rules you saved, plus the video’s length and a random installation code, to count your free minutes. Subtitle files leave Captionry only when you choose to share or save them. Anonymous usage counts, feedback you choose to send and share links are described below. No account is needed.
Data We Collect
Anonymous usage counts, caption text you choose to polish with AI, feedback you choose to send, and videos you choose to share as a link. Captionry never collects your video files, audio files or file names, except a copy of a video you choose to share as a link.
- No account or sign-in required
- No advertising or tracking tools, and no advertising identifier
- No crash reporting services
- Anonymous usage counts, described below
- Caption text, timing, chosen languages, saved caption rules and the video’s length, only when AI is on
- A random code for this installation, to count free AI minutes
- A code from Apple for this iPhone (not your Apple ID), so Apple can keep one marker showing when this iPhone last used free AI minutes
- For subscribers, Apple’s signed proof of the subscription, to check it
- Feedback is sent only when you choose to send it
- A copy of a video you choose to share as a link, with what is needed to check it and prevent abuse (see Share Links)
Speech Transcription — On-Device
Captionry turns your clip's speech into captions with the speech recognition built into iOS, on your iPhone only. Your audio never leaves the device to be transcribed — not to Apple, not to us, not to anyone. It works in Airplane Mode once your iPhone has the speech data for that language; the first time a language is used, iOS may download it.
Which languages are supported is decided by iOS and your device, not by Captionry.
On-Device Translation
With AI off, caption lines in another language are translated on your iPhone with Apple's built-in translation. With AI on, the caption text is translated by AI as described below. Video and audio stay on your iPhone either way. If AI cannot run (no free minutes left, or offline), your iPhone translates instead.
Optional AI Polish and Translation
Before you make captions, Captionry asks once whether to use AI. If you say yes, after the captions are made Captionry sends their text to fix likely speech-to-text mistakes and, if you chose caption lines in other languages, to translate them. Later videos follow your choice until you change it in Settings.
A request includes the caption text and its timing, which captions you changed yourself (so AI leaves them as they are), the spoken language, the caption-line languages, any caption rules you saved, your punctuation setting and the video’s length. It also includes the random code made for this installation, which counts your free minutes; a check from Apple that the request comes from the real Captionry app on a real device; a code from Apple for this iPhone (not your Apple ID), with which Apple keeps one marker for this iPhone showing when it last used free minutes; and random reference numbers and a change count, so the answer reaches the right captions and a repeated request is not counted twice. For subscribers, it also includes Apple’s signed proof of the subscription, to check it. Video and audio are never sent.
The request travels over an encrypted connection to our servers and is processed by our AI service partners only to correct and translate the caption text. Our hosting provider briefly handles your IP address to keep the service safe from abuse.
Your captions stay on your iPhone and remain editable and exportable whether you decline, turn AI off, go offline, run out of free minutes, or the AI step fails.
Correction Rules and Subtitle Files
Caption rules stay on this iPhone. With AI on, they are sent along with the caption text so the AI follows them.
SRT, WebVTT and Captionry JSON files are made on your iPhone, and Captionry does not upload them. If you share one with another app or service, that service's terms apply. Video and audio are never included.
Consent and Turning It Off
AI waits for your yes before it sends anything. Settings has a switch to turn it off, and then caption text stays on your iPhone, apart from the captions inside a video you share as a link. Turning it off does not delete any captions or clear the free-minutes marker Apple keeps for this iPhone, and editing and export stay free.
Free Minutes and Subscriptions
There is no Captionry account. Free AI minutes are counted with a random code made for this installation of the app; it is not your Apple ID or advertising identifier, and reinstalling the app can create a new one. Captionry also sends a code from Apple for this iPhone, and Apple keeps one marker for this iPhone showing when it last used free minutes. If the app is reinstalled in a month in which this iPhone already used free minutes, no free minutes are left until the next month. Delete my AI data does not clear this marker.
A subscription is bought and checked through your Apple account, and Restore Purchases brings it back after a reinstall. For subscribers, Captionry sends Apple’s signed proof of the subscription with each AI request, and when you buy it, restore it or open the AI plans in Settings, so our servers can check it. Prices are shown in the app and the App Store.
Each video uses its length against 15 free minutes or 120 subscriber minutes per calendar month (UTC). Unused minutes do not roll over. Running out only pauses AI; everything else keeps working.
What We Keep for AI Polish
We do not keep your caption text after answering a request, except for a short-lived copy (up to 24 hours) so a lost answer can be sent again without charging you twice. Our logs record only counts and error codes, never caption text.
Usage records are kept for 40 days. The installation code and its security checks are kept until 90 days after last use. Apple keeps the free-minutes marker for this iPhone; we keep only whether it is set, in the installation record. Abuse-protection records based on your IP address are kept for one day, and other short-lived security records are deleted within two days.
In Settings > Your Privacy, Delete my AI data removes this installation's record and free-minute count from our servers. It does not clear the free-minutes marker Apple keeps for this iPhone. It does not cancel an App Store subscription or delete captions or videos on your iPhone, and a request that was already processed cannot be recalled.
We ask our AI service partners not to keep or learn from your caption text; if that cannot be guaranteed, AI is skipped and your captions stay as they are. A partner may keep basic details about a request, not its text, under its own policy. Questions: [email protected].
Video Editing & Export
Importing, captioning, rendering and exporting your video all happen on your iPhone. Captionry never uploads or sends your video anywhere unless you choose Share link for it (see Share Links below).
Names & Terms
Your list of names and terms stays on your iPhone. It is given only to Apple's on-device speech recognition to help it listen for those words, and it is not part of cloud proofreading requests.
Photo Library Access
Captionry requests access to your photo library so you can select a clip to caption and save your exported video. This access is used solely to read and write files on your device at your direction. No video content is uploaded or transmitted anywhere unless you choose Share link for a video.
Share Links
Share link is optional. If you choose Share link on a video you made and agree to the sharing rules, Captionry uploads a copy of that one video (up to 60 seconds) to our servers and gives you a short link. Anyone you give the link to can watch the video in a web browser for 30 days; then the video is deleted. The video page is not listed anywhere or shown in search results, so only people with the link can find it.
What we collect, only when you create a link:
- the video you chose, with its sound, and a preview image made from it
- still frames from the video and its caption text, for the safety check
- a random code for this installation of the app, which we keep only in a scrambled form that cannot be turned back into the code
- a scrambled form of your IP address
- the app’s version and language, so the video page shows in your language
- reports that people send about a video: the reason, any note, and a scrambled form of the sender’s IP address
Why: to host the video for the people you share it with, to check it for safety before the link works, and to prevent abuse and enforce the sharing rules, for example by limiting how many links one installation can make and by banning people who break the rules.
Who receives it: our servers keep the video, the preview image and the records above. An outside automated safety service receives the still frames and caption text, for the check only; it does not receive the video itself, your IP address or the installation code. Alerts about held or reported videos reach our team through our messaging provider; they carry the report’s reason and note, never the video. A person on our team may watch a video that is held for review or reported. Anyone with the link can watch the video and see its preview image.
How long we keep it: the video and preview image are deleted when the link ends after 30 days, or sooner if you delete the link or we remove it. Caption text is not kept after the check. Records about a link, without the video (such as when it was made, the check result and any reports), are kept for up to 90 days after the link ends. If someone is banned for breaking the rules, what we need to keep the ban in place (the scrambled codes above) is kept for up to one year.
Deleting your links: in Settings → My links you can delete any link, or all of them with Delete all my links. A deleted link stops working at once and its video is deleted. If you no longer have the app, email [email protected] with the link and we will delete it.
Anonymous Usage Statistics
To learn which features are used and where things go wrong, Captionry sends small anonymous counts to a privacy-focused analytics service in the EU when:
- the app is opened
- captions finish generating
- an export succeeds or fails
Each count carries only general facts: the video length range (for example “30s–2m”), how long processing took as a range, the caption language, whether two caption lines were on, the export format, a short error code, and the app version, iOS version and device model, plus a random code for this installation that cannot be traced back to you and is not your Apple ID or advertising identifier.
The counts never contain your video, audio, captions, file names, location or anything you type, and they are never used for advertising or to track you across apps or websites.
In-App Feedback
If you open Send Feedback in Captionry’s Settings and tap the Send Feedback button, Captionry sends us:
- your message
- any screenshots you pick — location and other photo details are removed on your device first
- your email address, so we can reply
- the app version, iOS version, device model and language setting, which help us fix problems
A random code made on your iPhone is included only to stop the form from being abused. It is not linked to you and is not kept with your message.
The report travels over an encrypted connection to a private inbox that only the Captionry team can read. Our hosting provider briefly handles your IP address to block abuse and does not keep the report. Nothing is sent until you tap Send Feedback.
We use feedback only to reply to you and to improve Captionry — never for advertising — and delete it once it is no longer needed. To have your feedback deleted sooner, email [email protected] with the reference shown after sending.
Third-Party Services
Captionry has no advertising networks or tracking services. Speech recognition, on-device translation, editing and export happen on your iPhone. The only outside services are an analytics service, for the anonymous usage counts above; our hosting and messaging providers, to deliver feedback you choose to send; our servers and AI service partners, for AI polish and translation when you turn it on; our servers, an outside automated safety service and our messaging provider, for share links you create; and Apple, for your App Store purchase and the free-minutes marker for this iPhone (Apple gets this iPhone’s code, never your caption text).
Children's Privacy
Captionry does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. Apart from the anonymous usage counts described above, which identify no one, the app collects caption text for cloud proofreading only after someone allows it, collects feedback only if someone chooses to send it, and uploads a video only if someone chooses Share link. If you believe a child has sent us feedback, caption text or a shared video, email us and we will delete what we can.
Changes to This Policy
If our privacy practices change, we will update this page with a new "Last updated" date. Material changes will also be noted in the App Store release notes.
