Help: Captionry, step by step →

Can I improve captions without a Captionry subscription?

Yes. Local captions, manual edits and export remain free in Captionry. Save contextual correction rules, or export SRT/WebVTT/Captionry JSON, edit the text elsewhere and import it with a change preview. Those paths do not consume Captionry cloud minutes. See our Privacy Policy before sharing text.

How do I add captions to my video?

Open Captionry and tap the video picker to select a clip from your photo library. Captionry transcribes the audio on your device and generates captions in the preview. Those local captions are ready straight away. Choose a style, fix any words you need to, then tap Export to render the final video.

What caption styles are available?

Twenty templates, among them Pop, Karaoke, Clean Subtitle, Bold Box, Outline, Big Bold, Highlighter, Paper, Sunset, Ocean, Neon Glow and Cinema. Each brings its own font and background; you can then change font, size, colour, outline thickness and background (colour and opacity). Karaoke highlight lights words up as they are spoken.

What is Names & terms?

A short list under Settings → Names & terms of names, brands and terms that on-device speech recognition should listen for the next time you caption a video. It can help with unusual words, but it does not guarantee a correct result, and it never changes captions you already made. The list stays on your iPhone and is not sent with cloud proofreading.

Can Captionry add a translated caption line?

Yes, two lines in any combination. In Languages (or on the start screen) pick Caption line 1 and Caption line 2: what was said, or another language. Without AI, translation runs on your iPhone with Apple's built-in translation; with AI on, Captionry translates the caption text in the cloud, while video and audio stay on your device. You can even speak English and caption in two other languages.

What is cloud proofreading?

With AI on (Captionry asks once, before making captions), Captionry sends a request to fix likely speech-to-text mistakes and translate caption lines. It includes the caption text with its timing, the languages you chose and any caption rules you saved, plus the video’s length and a random installation code, to count your free minutes. Video and audio stay on your iPhone. You can turn it off in Settings. Your captions stay editable and exportable if you decline, go offline, run out of free minutes, or the AI step fails.

The transcript got a word wrong — can I fix it?

Yes. Speech recognition isn't perfect, especially with background noise or unusual names. Tap any word in the transcript to edit it directly; the caption preview and burned-in export both reflect your correction. Cloud proofreading is best-effort and can also be undone or edited.

Do I need an internet connection to use Captionry?

Import, on-device transcription, styling, editing and export run on your device and work in Airplane Mode, as long as your device already has the on-device speech model for the language you pick and the video isn't only stored in iCloud. Optional cloud proofreading needs a network connection; when you are offline, Captionry keeps the local captions. If a language's speech model isn't downloaded yet, Captionry tells you directly. See our Privacy Policy for the full explanation.

Is Captionry really free? Is there a watermark?

Local captioning, twenty styles, editing and watermark-free export stay free, with no ads and no Captionry account. Optional cloud proofreading includes 15 video minutes per UTC calendar month on the free allowance. Using up that allowance pauses cloud proofreading only.

Is there a subscription?

An optional subscription grants a larger cloud proofreading allowance of 120 video minutes per UTC calendar month. Unused minutes do not roll over. A whole video uses its duration against the remaining allowance. Prices are shown in the app and the App Store. Local editing and export stay available without a subscription.

How do the monthly video-minute limits work?

Each cloud proofreading request reserves the whole video’s duration. The free allowance is 15 video minutes per UTC calendar month; a subscriber allowance is 120 video minutes per UTC calendar month. Unused minutes do not roll over. Captionry does not need a Captionry account; Restore Purchases can share a subscription across reinstalls. Quota exhaustion pauses cloud proofreading only.

What video formats and lengths are supported?

Captionry supports short video clips in any format your device can play from the Photos library — MP4, MOV, and most common formats recorded by iOS or imported from other apps. The exported video is always an MP4, portrait or landscape.

Which languages does Captionry support?

Any language your iPhone's built-in speech recognition supports, including English and Cantonese/Traditional Chinese.

Does Captionry upload my videos anywhere?

Captionry uploads a video only if you create a share link for it. Then a copy of that video goes to our servers for 30 days, and you can delete it any time. Apart from the captions inside a video you share as a link, caption text, timing, languages and saved correction rules leave the device only after you allow Captionry cloud proofreading. Subtitle files are shared only at your direction. See our Privacy Policy.
