Video caption questions
How do I add subtitles to a long video on iPhone?
Use an app with no length limit that makes the subtitles on your iPhone, and keep it open until it finishes. Captionry has no length limit for captions made on your iPhone, and they do not use AI minutes. On an iPhone 14, a 10-minute clip is captioned and exported in under 8 minutes. You can burn the subtitles into the video, save them as an SRT file, or both.
What to know
- Captionry works only while it is open on screen. If you switch to another app or the screen locks, it can stop before it finishes.
- Before a long video, turn off Low Power Mode (it sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds), then set a longer time in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, so the screen stays on.
- AI polish is optional and counts the whole video: a 10-minute video needs 10 of your AI minutes. It takes videos up to 30 minutes and 400 captions; past that, or with too few minutes left, you keep the captions made on your iPhone.
- Captionry keeps its own copy of the video while you edit and saves a new copy when you export, so leave free space on your iPhone for both.

How to do it with Captionry
- Turn off Low Power Mode and set Auto-Lock to a longer time, then open Captionry and pick your video from Photos.
- Set Speech to the language spoken and tap Start (the first time, choose Keep on this iPhone or Use AI first). Keep Captionry open on screen until the captions are ready.
- Fix any words. Captionry saves your edits as you go, so if it closes you can usually open it again and tap Resume Editing.
- Tap Export for the video with the subtitles burned in, or tap Languages, then Subtitle file, to export an SRT file.

Can I get a transcript of a long video?
Yes. Export an SRT or WebVTT file from Subtitle file. It is plain text with times, and opens in any text editor.
Does a long video use my AI minutes?
Only if you allow AI polish. Making captions, editing, exporting the video and making subtitle files use no AI minutes.
Can I caption only part of a long video?
Yes. Trim the video after you pick it, before the captions are made. Only the part you keep gets captions and is exported, but trimming does not make captioning faster.
