Video caption questions

How do I add captions to a video on my iPhone?

Use an app that writes the captions from the speech. iMovie on iPhone can add titles, but you type each one yourself, and Apple’s Clips app, which made live titles, is no longer available to new users. Captionry listens to your video on your iPhone, writes the captions with every word timed, and saves a copy of the video with the captions burned in. Making captions, editing them and exporting without a watermark are free.

What to know

  • iMovie on iPhone adds titles: you pick a clip and a title style, then type the text yourself.
  • Apple’s Clips app is no longer updated, and since October 2025 new users cannot download it.
  • Burned-in captions are part of the picture, so they show in every app. Closed captions are a separate track that the viewer turns on.
  • Captions are most accurate on clear speech. Loud music or people talking over each other lowers accuracy.

How to do it with Captionry

  1. Open Captionry and pick your video from Photos. You can add up to 10 clips and trim them first.
  2. Choose the language spoken. Captionry writes the captions on your iPhone; a 1-minute clip takes about a minute on an iPhone 14.
  3. Tap any word to fix it, pick one of 20 caption styles, and turn on word-by-word highlighting if you like.
  4. Export. The video is saved to Photos, in an album called Captionry, with no watermark.

Is Captionry free?

Making captions, editing, the 20 styles and exporting are free, with no watermark and no account. Optional AI polish, which fixes misheard words and translates, includes 15 free video minutes a month; a subscription adds more.

Is my video uploaded to make captions?

No. Captions are made from the video on your iPhone. If you allow AI polish, what Captionry sends to fix and translate it includes the caption text with its timing, the languages and any caption rules you saved, plus the video’s length and a random installation code, to count your free minutes. It never sends the video or audio.
