Video caption questions

How do I make bilingual subtitles on iPhone?

Use a captions app that can show two caption lines. In Captionry you choose the language spoken, then Caption line 1 and Caption line 2: what was said, or a translation. Both lines appear in the preview and are burned into the exported video. The translation is made on your iPhone (iOS 18 or later) or, if you allow it, by AI (also on iOS 16 and 17).

What to know

  • Two lines in any combination: what was said plus a translation, or two translations.
  • Translated on your iPhone, which may ask to download a language the first time, or by AI after you allow it once.
  • Each language gets its own line, which shrinks to fit the width, so it normally stays on one line.
  • Translating on your iPhone needs iOS 18 or later. With AI allowed, two-language captions also work on iOS 16 and 17.
